Skowhegan Savings Team Raises Nearly $3000 for the American Cancer Society

SKOWHEGAN, Maine - Skowhegan Savings' employees, family and friends participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event, raising $2,779. The 18-hour relay was held from noon on Saturday, June 20th until 6:00 am on June 21st.Photo caption: from (left to right) Skowhegan Savings team included Kylie Damon, Traci James, Courtney Lyons, Kimberley Kyes, Eric Poulin, Karla Poulin, Yvon Poulin, Sheila Sherburne, Darilyn Davis, Donna Adams, and Daniel Kyes.

"I want to thank everyone on the Skowhegan Savings team and everyone who made donations," said Karla Poulin, the Skowhegan Savings team leader. "I want to say that it was one of the most emotional events I have ever attended. Despite the rain, blisters and body pain it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done and I'm sure the team would agree. I kept saying to myself I can take one more step, even though my body said no, because nothing could be as bad as being told you have cancer."

Weeks prior to the event, the bank held a yard sale to raise money. The bank's donation of office furniture made the yard sale a huge success with over $500 being raised. Additional money was raised through team member sponsorships and donations received from the bank's employees.

The Skowhegan Savings team kicked off the event by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem. Cancer survivors and their caregivers began by walking the first lap of the relay; then the rest of the participants joined with a member from each team continuously walking during the 18-hour event.

Skowhegan Savings' team members included: Karla Poulin, Sheila Sherburne, Darilyn Davis, Donna Adams, Loreal Sherburne, Vicki Alward, Tammy King, Vicki Bosworth, Jayne White, Debbie Nadeau, Jess Dixon, Daniel Kyes, Kylie Damon, Traci James, Courtney Lyons, Kimberley Kyes, Eric Poulin, Yvon Poulin, and Amanda King.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
